"The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms" - N. K. Jemisin

I have never heard of this book or author but Goodreads put on my list of things that might interest me. Now I did not finish it due to inappropriate material that seemed unnecessary. It is way weird when your main character is panting after a evil, pain inducing God. Just plain weird in my book.

I liked the main character though despite her weird obsession. Yeine is of royalty at a distance. She grew up in Darre a small village that does well for itself. Her father was killed in a hunting accident and her mother annexed herself from the royal palace to be with her love even though he was from a poor village. She was assassinated later on in Yeine's life. She is around 16 when her grandfather summons her to the kingdom without an explanation as to why. Upon her arrival at Sky city she is greeted but is chased by Nahadoth the evil God because she bears no mark on her forehead of what he rank is.

Evading the evil God she attains the mark and meets two siblings who have had a feud over the throne throughout their childhood. Without friends, soldiers, and influence over the people she rallies all she can attain to win the battle for royalty. During her search for assistance and knowledge she learns her mother was not the loving woman who raised her but a ruthless ruler with a knack for winning.

Don't get me wrong I liked the story and some of the characters. However I was not a huge fan of the inserts in the middle of a story. I was reading along and it would show a break saying. "Hold on let me back up  and explain." Just as someone is retelling the story but remembers the background information as they go along. Its not a terrible technique I just felt like it was a little overused. I wouldn't recommend it just because of the sexual material that started halfway through the book. I did enjoy the first half though.
